As is the case sometimes with Hobb’s trilogy and writer’s generally, this book suffers slightly from The Empire Strikes Back syndrome and feels somewhat incomplete without the final book to tie it all together.

There’s a lot to love here. The politics of Buckkeep are in full force: the Farseers, and friends of, must weigh up the political tensions of the Piebald threat to the throne, an alliance of love with the Out Islanders, and a cross-pollination with the previous Liveship Traders trilogy. This latter aspect is a real kindle to the heart; the Six Duchies is introduced to the magic of the Rain Wilds and familiar faces make appearances and tie together fun threads.

It’s a book that largely sits still, however. Characters continue to be hamstrung by personal differences. Fitz struggles with an impossibly large set of responsibilities. And the next adventure is on the horizon (or across the seas), but that is still yet to come.
