The Asylum Confessions by Jack Steen
3.0
dark mysterious sad medium-paced
Plot or Character Driven: Character

I wasn't 100% sure what I was getting into with this one, but I love asylum based stories so I was cautiously optimistic.

First off, I listened to the audio of this one and the narrator was very good for Jack I think this collection would've benefitted immensely from having a full cast. With how widely varied the characters were I just needed a narrator with more range or more narrators in general.

I don't love books that are essentially a collection of slightly connected short stories. So I was disappointed that this was what this book was- I wanted a more developed over arching plot, however this book is severely lacking there. All of the stories end the same way with Jack saying something about a bar and figuring out where he works and drinks and to come meet him sometime which made this collection feel like a collection of creepy pastas or a web serial? Not a fan.

I will say that the individual patients stories were interesting and unique with clear and distinct voices- so that was fun. I found them easy to get sucked into and hard to put down.

Overall I enjoyed the stories I was entertained and curious about what was to come, however I'm not sure if I'll continue with this series.
