The Stone of Sorrow by Brooke Carter

4.0

I received an advance copy of The Stone of Sorrow from the publisher, Orca Books, for an honest review.

The story follows Runa, a strange eyed fragile girl who is just trying to follow in her sister's footsteps to prove to their clan that she isn't just a freak. Runa's sister Syr is the keeper of the powerful moonstone, which is used to help their clan survive the harsh weathers of Iceland. But when Syr gets kidnapped and the entire village put under a curse, it's up to Runa to get to moonwater and rescue Syr. She meets some very unlikely companions along the way, ones she is unsure if she can trust. Runa must prove not only to everyone else, but also to herself that she can be strong and brave and save the life of her sister and clan.

I read this book pretty quickly once I actually sat down and read. Though the story was rather simple, get from point A to point B with an ultimate goal of revenge and rescuing, it was thoroughly engaging. I really enjoyed the main character, Runa, since she wasn't your typical protagonist to begin with, and that isn't something that you get very much. There was continued action throughout the entire book, lots of nods to Norse mythology, and a landscape that felt real and magical all at the same time. There were a few instances that I felt like some of the problems got resolved extremely quickly, but I think that has more to do with my lack of knowledge about Norse mythology than anything else. I really enjoyed the little riddles throughout the story that felt like a nod, and after I stopped getting hung up on how quickly they came upon the answers, I started to just view it as things that happen daily for them.

I don't want to give too much away since this beauty comes out TOMORROW! I would highly recommend this one!
