4.9/5 - i am so heartbroken. i almost don’t have words. i have never been to jamaica but i could see all of its magic and healing through this book. i am crying just writing this. i was so seen and heard in this book; so many of my feelings that i’ve never been able to express with words were masterfully written, healing me in the process. so sad and so beautiful. I see so much of myself in Tilla and i’m proud of us both for getting through the storm. [-.1 for making me cry at work]
as for some of the negative reviews i’ve read for this book; it just wasn’t written for you and that’s ok! it is so clear that Asha wrote this to heal/for herself and the girls that went through the same. summer hurricane touched on family trauma, colorism, assault, self hatred & shame; if that doesn’t resonate with you, that’s ok, but that doesn’t make the book bad.
