opps 's review for:
Victory. Stand!: Raising My Fist for Justice
by Tommie Smith, Derrick Barnes
Thanks to the publisher for providing an ARC for review!
3.5 rounded up.
Wasn't a bad bio. The best parts were with Smith's early life and his time leading up to the Olympics. Everything after the 1968 Olympics feels abridged and the impact of the fist doesn't feel as weighty as it should. The best parts of this book are what we don't get from other writings about this event.
Art was serviceable, as tends to happen in graphic biographies. I'm just not sure that this holds up as strongly against other tellings/formats/accountings of the actions and impact of Smith and Carlos' protest.
I'll still recommend it to teen patrons looking for information about Civil Rights, sports, or Tommie Smith, but I don't think I'll read this one again.
