The Four Winds by Kristin Hannah

This was such a broad, and expansive reading experience!

When I first began, I thought 464 pages would see me finishing around the end of the month since I only read at night. I finished last night and have been basking in the glow of a really good story. Sad, but really good, just how I like'em!

If you've ever wondered what it might have been like to live during the Dust Bowl, this story will certainly educate you. If you've ever wondered what happened to those who decided to leave that area, this will answer the question for what may have happened to many. And, if you've ever wondered if it could get any worse with this pandemic, and all that it's brought, read this book. I think if you're like me, you will look around and think, hey, this ain't so bad.

Elsa was totally believable from the beginning, and when she first defies her parents, I was already on her side, hoping she'd show them a thing or two. We're told "things happen for a reason," and I think it completely fits every step of Elsa's journey. She stood up to her parents, met Rafe, and had her children. Because she met him, she met Tony and Rose. Because of Tony and Rose, she learned about family, love, and how land can hold you in its grip, until you feel you've become an extension of it. Because she learned to survive some of the worst conditions ever experienced on Planet Earth, she also learned to let go, and California was the result. And because of California, she garners even more courage, and independence, while, once again, standing up to challenge after challenge.

The ending? Not totally unexpected because I kept thinking, now how in the world is THAT going to work out? One might give up . . . this? Or, the other might accept . . . that?

All in all, five mesmerizing stars!

Highly recommend but not for the faint of heart!

I just so happen to have The Great Alone - looks like I'm tackling that one next!
