Loser by Jerry Spinelli

Oh, damn. This is a sneaky little heartbreaker of a book. Everyone has known a Zinkoff (or been a Zinkoff), and the narration does an outstanding job of articulating what the world looks like through eyes that see things a little bit differently, and it does so without being heavy-handed or using labels that often alienate rather than engender sympathy. My kid recommended this book to me, calling it “just...beautiful,” and both his assessment and his taste are spot on. Highly recommend.
