Iron & Embers by Helen Scheuerer
5.0

“gold will turn to silver in a blaze of iron and embers, giving rise to ancient power long forgotten.”

The scream I scrumpt when I got the email saying that I made it to the Iron & Embers street team, y’all!

If you’ve been following along, the Legends of Thezmarr series has been my most recent book obsession. Iron & Embers is first book in the next series, set in the same world, The Ashes of Thezmarr. This series follows Wren, an alchemist and heir to the throne of Delmira, and Torj (AKA The Bear Slayer), the lightning-kissed Warsword of Thezmarr.

Wren and Torj have such a beautiful and tortured relationship. They both want each other, but after the War of the Midrealms and the death of her sister Anya, and two of her best friends, Sam and Ida, Wren was forever changed. Instead of the natural healer she had been before and during the war, she used her knowledge of alchemy to become a poisoner for anyone responsible, but was left unpunished for their crimes against the Midrealms. She shut out the world around her, even the potential for love.

Torj started feeling things for Wren as he got to know her during War strategies and planning. But during the final battle, something amazing and magical happened, bonding them together through Wren’s lighting magic - it saved his life that day, but scared him as well. He literally couldn’t forget, couldn’t get Wren out of his head or out of his system.

Then one day, Wren’s deepest desire came true - she was accepted to Drevenore Academy of Alchemical Arts to become a master alchemist. But as the heir to Delmira, she would need protection. Who better than the brawny and brooding Warsword who knew her so well?

When you read Iron & Embers (and you should!), you should expect:
Romantasy
Dark Academia
Feisty and smart FMC
Strong and broody MMC
Enemies to Lovers
Bodyguard
One Horse
Tension & Banter
Lightning-wielders
Soul bond (think fated mates)
Found family
“Who did this to you?”
“Fuck it”
Pet Names

This masterpiece was an absolute roller coaster of emotions. I laughed, I cried, I kicked my feet, I blushed…and when it was over, I stared at the wall for a bit.

Here are a few of my favorite quotes that had me reeling:

“It’s about the person who’s holding your hand at the end. The person you can’t let go of, no matter how hard you might have tried.”

“No games. No secrets. You’re what has been missing all my life. And I intend to keep you. Consequences be damned.”

“You’re killing me, Embers…You’re still healing. I’m trying to be decent —“ “Forget decent,” she said, pushing against his hand. “Give me wicked and unleashed.”

I love this story so much! Dare I say I like it even more than Blood & Steel (book 1 in The Legends of Thezmarr series) and that’s high praise! Iron & Embers had me on a high of highs and on the low of lows, but in the end, it was an amazing ride and I can’t wait for Thorns & Fire - the next chapter in this story - coming July 2025!
