City Love by Susane Colasanti

3.0

I’ve read a few books by this author and was excited to dive into this story. Three girls, one summer, and New York City as the back drop sounded like the perfect young adult read. The book was good, but I sometimes found it hard to relate too. The characters felt contrived at times and far from realistic. I struggled to get into this book, but at the half-way point I felt like I couldn’t put it down. I wanted to know what happened. I’d become invested. The plot for each girl kind of snuck up on me. I found myself pushing for, feeling for, and wanting something for each of them. The ending was a little more abrupt than I was expecting, but I enjoyed the hopeful tone of it. It left things hanging which I understand as there is another book that will continue this story.
Something I really loved about this book was the setting and how the characters interacted with it. Each girl had a different reason for falling in love with New York. Each girl often mentioned the things she loved about New York. The author did an amazing job describing the city from each girl’s perspective. It was like rediscovering a city that I’ve been too and made my own opinions about. I also loved the friendship aspect of Sadie, Darcy, and Rosanna. Three strangers came together to share and apartment and ended up forming a wonderful friendship. I’m interested to see where the next book takes me.
