De Profundis by Oscar Wilde
4.0

This is an uncomfortable letter written by Wilde to Lord Alfred from prison after being charged with gross indecency, which at the time was known as him displaying a desire for homosexual relations with Lord Alfred. The discomfort emitted in this letter comes from the knowledge that Wilde sits in a cell; rebuked by the world due to something that was ultimately no one's business, nor did it negatively impact the world at all. Should you desire to delve further into the prosecution which was imposed upon Wilde you might learn that many of his works, namely "The Picture of Dorian Gray", were utilized to plead the case against him.

I was ultimately saddened & embarrassed for Wilde. Here is a great author of our time who writes pleadingly for a person to take ownership in their part of their relationship. We see him plead & degrade & toss aside, only to return to Lord Alfred once again in the hopes of being loved in return. Reading Wilde's letter to a person who seemingly cared very little about his well-being & yet, continuously came around to benefit himself frustrated me.

The brutality of society towards people certainly made his experiences no easier to cope with & truly worsened his overall situation. However personalized his writing is towards its subject, I found this to be a very relatable piece.
