The Prince & The Apocalypse by Kara McDowell

3.0

Okay, so here's the deal with The Prince & the Apocalypse – it's like the ultimate love child of a YA romance and a disaster movie. Kara McDowell serves up a delicious cocktail of swoon-worthy romance and impending doom, and let me tell you, it's a combo you didn't know you needed until now.

Wren is in London on her senior trip and everything is not going as planned. Her final attempt to mark one item - the last item on her itinerary - breakfast at The World's End restaurant is thwarted b because it's closed for renovations. That's when she runs into Theo, the missing prince that everyone is looking for. When she helps him escape, she winds up missing her flight home, and that's when she learns that the world is ending in eight days when a massive comet will strike the earth.

I'm not a big fan of the insta-love, but I can see how Wren and Prince Theo would fall quickly given the circumstances. The middle bogs down a little, but then it picks back up the last six chapters.

But hold onto your seats, folks, because McDowell doesn't just stop at throwing her characters into the chaos. Oh no, she gleefully dangles them over the edge of a cliff – both literally and figuratively – and then drops the mother of all cliffhangers at the end. I mean, seriously? But hey, I'm not complaining (well, maybe just a little). Because despite feeling like McDowell just played a cruel prank on us readers, I have to admit, I'm kind of hooked. I need to know what happens next. I need to know if our star-crossed lovers will defy the odds and find their happily ever after amidst the chaos.

So, if you're into heart-stopping romance, impending apocalypses, and endings that leave you simultaneously satisfied and cursing the author's name, then this might just be your next guilty pleasure read.
