Catherine Dickens: Outside the Magic Circle by Heera Datta

4.0

I truly enjoyed this peek inside the world of Catherine Dickens, a person heretofore unknown to me. Of course, we have all heard of Charles Dickens. But the author's obvious love and dedication of the story behind the man makes the tale shine.

It is written in a style that is heavy on description and light on conversation. However, that is the style of the time, and I appreicate that it was written in homage to that style.

I both pitied Catherine for her despondence and helplessness and admired her steadfastness. I was so delighted at her simple joy in holding her first grandchild after all the privations her husband had put her through. I greatly admired the use of the actual letters to further both the plot and the characterization of the characters. I found myself cheering her backbone after her son's death, when she finally realized she was her own person.
