tealightfully 's review for:
Hazel and Gray
by Nic Stone
IN STARK CONTRAST TO THE SHALLOW, EMPTY, CONTRIVED feeling of Faraway #1, this short story felt like an entire novel, in a delectable way.
How was this only 29 pages?
The fairy tale nods were clear in this one and I liked the breadcrumb nod via the legos.
Nic Stone managed to carve a deep well of character development, unique retelling, and a dark/twisty modern engaging story arc in a small space and I gobbled it up. Dear Martin, has been on my TBR list for awhile now and, if this short story is any indication of what's in store, I'll be grabbing a copy of her novel soon.
Listen.
It was a twist,
followed by a twist,
followed by the ending that makes you really want it to be a full length novel.
This was a far cry away from the collection's front runner The Prince and the Frog, which was a mess and a half times two.
Trigger Warnings under the spoiler.
