Lila by Marilynne Robinson
4.0
So much to say about this book! I loved it but its not the kind of book I would recommend to most people, in fact if I had known how much of the book was dialogue I wouldn't have checked it out. Listening to it probably helped me enjoy it so much: I am a really fast reader and lots of dialogue can slow me down or I end up confused about who is talking.
As her new life in Gilead unfolds Lila has to conquer her loneliness and the comfort of that, her lack of trust in people and her sentimental attachment to the knife that "Doll" gave her that was probably used to kill Lila's father.
This book is about Lila, her life and how she got to Gilead but her story unfolds mostly through conversation with the Reverend about life, the Bible and God and then internal conversations that Lila has with herself and her unborn child about all of it. I'm not at all religious but I found all of it fascinating and I wish I could read more of how Lila sees the world, how she understands people and God.
I know a few people that I'm going to directly recommend this to but I wouldn't expect it to become a bestseller.
Final note: I had no idea this was the third in a series of books set in Gilead. need to find the others!
