Child of God
by Cormac McCarthy
McCarthy manages to combine bone chilling content with beautiful writing nearly unmatched by anything I’ve read.
Child of God is at its heart a story about an extremely stunted man (intellectually and physically) who’s only skill in life has been his clean shot. After he loses everything in life and is forced out of society he dives deep into a cavernous state of monstrosity. This book chillingly and masterfully depicts this born monster rotten to the core preying on the town which McCarthy seemingly suggests is also rotten at its core to some degree.
The story is captivating from start to finish, in part due to its poetic writing, in part due to the message McCarthy is trying to convey, and in part due to the deprived plot.
