It's been a long time since I've read something challenging. I tend to read book for the escapism and the relaxation, so it was really nice to dive into something difficult.

This novel is told mostly in conversations, diving back and forth between the real world and a fictional one. The writing is truly beautiful, and the characters are complex, difficult, and wondrously three dimensional.

There was a fantastic moment where the author described a fact about rivers, and I was overwhelmed with the beauty; and when I looked up the fact and it wasn't true, I felt both betrayed and also completely captivated, that I had become so immersed in the world he was creating. Truly gorgeous. A little dark at times, but overall a stunning piece of writing.
