A Silent Voice, Vol. 1 by Yoshitoki Oima

i totally didn't expect this to hit as hard as it did. i mean, sure, it's about bullying, so i expected seriousness, but the dark tone especially of the last few chapters, the talk about suicide.......that was heavy stuff.

there's so much nuance to the plot, with the depiction of group dynamics (how fast the situation shifts for the main character from abuser to victim!), the teacher's casual ableism and lowkey complicitness but then absolving himself of any responsibility, Shoko's overprotective mom who probably ends up hurting more than helping her......it all felt very very realistic.
