Don't judge this book by the title. The title is appropriate, just not for the playful reason you think. This ominous plot is driven by a compelling character study. The heroine, Elle, is quite fallible despite her attempts at restraining her life to black-and-white perfection. She is one friend away from misanthropy, and as her subterranean mental issues emerge, she copes via Rain-Man-like counting exercises and self-destructive random sex.
When she meets Dan, her frigid boundaries are jostled and stretched, but her thick veneer remains impenetrable. And even though you spend the entire novel in her first person POV, the rationale behind her peculiar personality is tiresomely obtuse. Be patient. MH might drag out this story--especially the unneeded byplay with the neighbors--but Dan's tenacity embeds a hope that the couple might someday share something more than their sexual magnetism.
For all its violations of gratuitous eroticism, you'll drool with enthusiasm, smile at buzzing boardroom vibrators, cry for a broken little girl, and you'll be very reluctant to put this down.
