Market Forces by Richard K. Morgan

5.0

At first I thought this would be a typical testosterone fuelled sex and violence fuelled romp through a dystopian future - you know typical from this author. Yet hiding underneath that slick exterior is a dark underbelly of biting and deeply bitter satire, taking down the wealthy and their laissez faire trickle down economic system and self centred and arrogant neo imperialist world view. At the centre of this tale however, is the gripping unraveling of the main character, as he comes to embody, in spite of himself, the darkest aspects of the world he inhabits. This is truly a book with a heart and a soul, you feel every downward lurch as his life spins off the rails. This really is a shining example of the genre.

As an aside I do find it super interesting how books are products of their time, even when set in the future - the book is overflowing with concern about terrorism, inequality, and globalism, which in many cases in our present have unfortunately been superseded by larger evils.
