Stuart Little by E.B. White
2.0

What a bizarre book. Though I read Charlotte's Web and Trumpet of the Swan as a child, honestly I would have been perfectly fine if I'd never gotten around to this one. Don't get me wrong, E.B. White can set a scene and turn a phrase (the Central Park boat race chapter!), but in this particular volume he can't seem to tell a cohesive story. From the opening scene of happy human parents returning home with a newborn mouse, through the bit with the bespectacled and betweeded substitute teacher Stuart claiming to be Chairman of the World and ordering a boy to steal a girl's keepsake and then putting him on trial, to the (deliberately?) jerkface "love letter" he sends to his unsuspecting date, to the tragi-bad date itself ruined mostly by Stuart's piqued masculine pride...this is quite the ride. I can't say I enjoyed the read, but I was entertained.
