A true and faithful depiction of early American socialism and despite the pacing issues, largely towards the final act of the book, the message stays true. I also enjoy the continued use of biblical imagery and spiritual optimism throughout such a bleak novel; particularly the invoking of the story of Moses as well as the figure of Pieta. While it has its problems, it would be discourteous of me to recognise this as anything other a highly influential piece of literature.
