The City We Became by N.K. Jemisin

5.0

Where do I even begin?? This whole concept of this book blew my mind. Cities are embodied as people, and all the boroughs of New York City are individuals themselves. Basically, cities have souls. I love New York City with a passion that I get from my dad loving the city. I have really wanted to go back and visit again, but with the pandemic, I obviously cannot. This book whisked me away into the beauty and magic of New York with an added bonus of a wonderfully crafted story. There were parts of this book that shook me to my core.

"Come, then, City That Never Sleeps. Let me show you what lurks in the empty spaces where nightmares dare not tread."

This line made me physically gasp. I had to actually close the book as well and regain my senses for a moment.

This book is a treasure, and I am so happy I picked it up. If you like the idea of this book, or love NYC at all, read this. You won't regret it.
