The Heart's Invisible Furies
by John Boyne
I listen to this audio, and the performance was very great. Loved the Irish accents and the different characters throughout the book. This book was long. I realized that at the very end that I had listened to the unabridged version which may have been a contributor to why it felt sooooo long. However, the storyline had a great beginning, middle and end for all characters, which I appreciated. Especially Alice. We followed the main character through a lot of tough situations. We learned a lot about Irish history with the LGBTQ community. And at times I was shocked that the book went all the way up to essentially what is present day. it took me literally an entire year to finish this, but I would recommend. There were times where it was really hard to listen to, because the main character at times reminded me of some of my close gay friends, and it was hard to hear the trauma knowing there is an entire lost generation of gay men and that this story line, although fiction, is still very real. I think that’s what really hit home and made it harder to get through for me. Would recommend.
