I loved The Collector by Fowles. Pure, total, freakish love. So when I picked up this book I wasn't surprised that I couldn't put it down. I read it in 4 days, which for me and a book 656 pages long, is kind of a big deal (I'm a slow reading, easily distracted bird). The premise is promising and mysterious. His writing is intoxicating. He manages to make the setting of the book (primarily a Greek island) a strong character of its own, which is a thing I think a lot of authors struggle with and a thing I really enjoy and appreciate when done well.
HOWEVER, I still really don't know if I know what just happened in this book. That could be speaking highly or poorly of the author, or just poorly of me. That said, I still really enjoyed the book. Does that even make sense? I don't know, and I don't care. Do I think it could have been a cool 100 pages shorter and still convey... whatever it conveyed? Yes. Will I be reading it again? Probably not any time soon. However, it solidified Fowles' place on my list of favorite authors and I'm going to be seeking more.
