See No Stranger: A Memoir and Manifesto of Revolutionary Love by Valarie Kaur

5.0

The idea that we are at a time of transition through which we must breathe and push to give birth to something better is radically feminine and redemptive. I wish I had a better understanding of how we can restructure societal systems in the process. If we don’t, no amount of breathing and pushing will birth sustainability. Her experiences of transformative reconciliation suggest that great healing can result from pushing through difficult conversations … but again, it’s on a personal level. I’m not sure how we could recreate it at the societal level, which, as she points out, the US needs to do, owning our historical crimes and humbly making restitution for them. As she points out, the past cannot be changed, but the healing can begin.

I love the joy she finds in simple things and special moments when she connects profoundly with the divine, and I admire her tireless advocacy and compassion.
