Disgrace by J.M. Coetzee
4.0

At the beginning I thought this was going to be a 1-star read. An old white man with rape fantasies - think I'll pass.

Not rape, not quite that, but undesired nevertheless, undesired to the core. As though she had decided to go slack, die within herself for the duration, like a rabbit when the jaws of the fox close on its neck.

If it's undesired and you know it's undesired, it's rape, whether she says no or not.

He never seems to realise that he raped and abused his student.
Spoiler And when his daughter is also raped, he is utterly unable to understand and comfort her. How can he, if he can't even acknowledge that he did the same?

Nevertheless, there was enough there for me to keep going, especially as I grew up in South Africa during the time the book is set in, but no longer live there, so could relate to the feelings and atmosphere of racial tensions and guilt.
