I'm in awe. Dr. Dyson has written a fitting tribute to 2Pac. This is the first academic book regarding hip hop I've ever read. I learned to see 'Pac through a different lens, more so as a person who struggled throughout his short life with addiction and anger vs an irresponsible rapper.
There are so many lessons one can learn from 2Pac. As extreme as he was, I think a large part of his purpose was to bring awareness and hopefully corrective action to save the lives of poor . Or his life can be viewed as a cautionary warning against THUG LIFE.
To many people, 2Pac was their voice, the one who understood their pain. Anyone reading about Mr. Shakur's life and trying to understand his legacy definitely need to read this book. For me, I gained understanding. As a now 35 year old vs a 15 year old when 2Pac passed, I can attest to having a different perspective. Knowing the whys of how someone's mind operated is a difficult task and I appreciate Dr. Dyson's careful, thoughtful examination of 2Pac's life and legacy .
