Markus bloody Zusak. I felt conflicted at times reading this story but I guess that’s to be expected. If he didn’t write so well I’d probably feel differently about some harder parts of the stories being told. But still I was engrossed, engaged and so entertained. As a shameless devotee of The Book Thief I’ll admit I kind of adored the similarities in his signature style of narration. Part of me wandered if it was an intentional choice or almost homage to the voice of ‘Death’ (iykyk) because TBT is his only work of fiction that doesn’t feature a dog. I may be overthinking it or uber fan girling. My only real critique is that this memoir ain’t for the faint hearted animal lover. It’s gritty and in small parts even a bit gruesome. But readers who brave the pages will be frequently rewarded with laughter through tears such is Zusak’s gift for authentic storytelling.
