4.5

4.5 stars rounded up. I think it might have worked better as two or three books instead of one, and the footnotes, though relevant, stylistically nerdy, and sometimes very funny, were too clunky for me at times and pulled me out of the story.

Kuang is perfection when it comes to writing heartbreak and betrayal. She’s so good at making you care about people and it hurts so bad when things go wrong. The friendships in this book reminded me of how I used to feel about Harry, Ron, and Hermione when I was a teenager.

This book felt very different from the poppy war series. It felt a little simpler to me, in a good way. Nostalgic, even.

Of course I loved the story. I loved the silver metaphor. I loved learning process on the way towards revolution and liberation. And I most especially loved getting to revel in some linguistics and translation-powered magic. This was a great read and I’ll probably be buying at least one more copy for my dad.

As always, looking forward to whatever Kuang wants me to read next.
