Killing Me by Michelle Gagnon

4.0

BIG thanks to Netgallery/G.P. Putnam's Sons for an Advanced Reader’s Copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

It’s rare that a book can strike the balance between thrilling and comedic, but Michelle Gagnon does exactly that with Killing Me.

Three chapters in and I knew I was going to love this book. The tone of this book is exactly what I’m looking for when it comes to a book that offers thrills without being too serious. Don’t get me wrong, I love a dark & twisty mystery/thriller book, but sometimes you need a little palette cleanser - and this is a good one without having to ditch a good the suspense entirely.

Now, I went into this book pretty blind, so I don’t want to say too much in this review. But I have to talk a bit about the characters, which is perhaps the biggest standout from this story.

So, what do you get when you put a con artist, a serial killer hunter, a Las Vegas hotel owner and hooker together? An unforgettable found family. Amber is a main character that is not only smart and spunky, but someone you’ll root for from page one. Her inner monologue is all too relatable from someone who has consumed enough true crime to think about how I’d react if I was kidnapped by a psycho killer. So much of this book is her holding onto her humor through the craziest shit which keeps this book light despite its heavy topics. She really is one of the best heroines I’ve read and has been added to my list of beloved book characters.

The same is true for the rest of this book’s cast, which is primarily women - all of whom are flawed but so full of heart. Alongside Amber is Dot, the beloved hotel owner with endless connections - I only wish there was more of her/Amber together in this book because I think their dynamic is one of my favorites. Very grandmother/granddaughter-like.
(I'll let you get to know the rest of the characters yourself. :*)

And the best part is? THERE IS GOING TO BE A SEQUEL. So, prepare to be sick of me when it is announced/released. In the meantime, add this to your TBR and pick it up on May 16, 2023. Trust me, you’re going to love it.
