I have read a couple of Moriarty’s books before this, and this one is hands down the best I’ve read from her so far. She gets deep in this this somewhat meandering story, exploring themes of loss, grief, divorce, death, fear, and relationships. To me, the overarching messages was: make the most of the time you have with the people you love. I think another key idea is: Don’t let fear take over your life.
There are so many characters in this one, and I enjoyed the creative ways in which the author entwined their lives! However, it could be a little bit confusing keeping track of so many.
I appreciated these themes from my Christian worldview! We don’t know how much time we’ve been given by the Lord, so we must spend it wisely! We have such a finite amount of time with which to love those in our lives. It’s precious, it is meant to be used up and maxed out!
Also, don’t let fear drive you. Let love drive you. When fear drives your actions, it sucks away all the joy of life; but love enriches your experiences— even the painful or frightening ones.
My favorite character was Cherry. It takes a while to finally uncover her whole story, but it’s worth it!
I detracted a start because of the amount of language. There’s frequent use of mild language, and semi-frequent use of strong language. I’ll share other content advisory below!
4 ⭐️
CW: mentions of suicide and self-harm, sex is mentioned with very mild description (no actual sex scenes though), frequent mild language, semi-frequent strong language, divorce, death of friends/loved ones, depression, stalking, reference to domestic violence
