Doubt/uncertainty is THE major theme here. Just about every character has some sort of doubt: about self, about life, about the case, etc.
As a matter of fact, I think the only character in the piece who DOESN'T doubt is the demon himself!
This novel also tangles with the issue of the blurry line between the end of demonic activity and the beginning of mental illness, or vice versa.
Far more suspenseful than the film, I might add!
