After
by Anna Todd
1.5!!
(no spoilers, dw)
if all the red flags can be combined to form a single person, that would be our very own male protagonist in this story—if you think that alone is not valid enough to give this book a low rating, then here are the additional reasons why:
CONFLICT & PLOT
》i get that mc is built up like this in order to support the main plot of the story, but clearly he is conflicted too often enough both internally and externally that there's not enough breather for the readers, much less his love interest in the book.
》as much as how i admire anna todd for creating such complex characters (that's hard because you have to come up with a lot of resolutions thereafter), it felt like the whole passive-aggressive conflict was thrown off into the book just for the purpose of excitement rather than for serving the best interest of the story.
》scenes are strung together cohesively and each of them showed relevance to the main point of the story. (½ star)
》but it's just... conflict and conflict on top of the other. and downright inappropriate form of catharsis. need i say more?
POV & VOICE
》the only thing i liked about this book is how the POV flowed consistently. the author did a great job of making the characters' feelings unambiguous in the subtlest way possible.
》 writing style is a bit cliché.
PACING & TENSION
》 this is the most exciting part of the story.
》 although there are too many alarm bells which made it almost impossible for me to fall in love with the characters, the details needed to propel the story are presented in a way that it keeps the readers at the edge of their seats and, well, read more.
》 too. many. feels. pERIODT.
— with that being said, i really have a lot of expectations for the second book, After We Collided
"You make me want to be good for you. I want to be good for you, Tess."
