I'm Glad My Mom Died
by Jennette McCurdy
challenging
emotional
reflective
sad
tense
fast-paced
Please be aware this book has very graphic depictions of triggering material surrounding eating disorders, addiction, abuse, and mental illness.
A tumultuous and heartbreaking account, written and read in first person, from Jennette McCurdy of her childhood and early adulthood. From her relationship with her mother to her relationship with food and her body, we follow Jennette closely through her journey, dipping into memories or moments of self-reflection.
Many aspects were offered in intense and graphic detail, in particular those of her severe disordered eating and some sexual content, and I felt that (in comparison) other interesting interactions or reflections were not offered in the same detail. Nevertheless, it was well-paced and frank. I was taken aback but also very grateful for her honesty in regard to her inner battle towards therapy and then towards recovery.
It is a devastating, compelling, and significant memoir of resilience and recovery.
