The Joys of Motherhood
by Buchi Emecheta
This was a very different book for me than usual but I am so glad I read it! It was hard for me to read at first because of the attitudes towards women and gender, but that's really just about me and the white Western perspective I'm coming from. I loved how Emecheta showed us Nnu Ego's life, from before her birth to her end, and very carefully and delicately drew her conclusions and criticisms together as the story continued. It was a hard book and a sad book, but a well written and good book. All of the characters but especially Nnu Ego felt so real in their desires and actions, and the frequently inevitable failure to achieve what they wanted and be given the rewards they had been working for really hit home.
