The Luis Ortega Survival Club by Sonora Reyes
5.0
This book is wickedly gut-wrenching but insanely powerful in its valuable message and exploration of characters and traumatic circumstances. Rich with authentic character creation and development it looks at neurodiversity and sex-culture, both the ugliest sides and the side that makes your heart grow three times. This book will hit the hearts of neurodiverse readers and is vital for neurotypical readers to consider, simply due to the ease with which neurodiverse existence is presented throughout.
Readers should take care of the trigger warnings as The Luis Ortega Survival Club does not shy away from the dirty. Reyes keeps the storytelling of trauma authentic while still creating a book that is anchored in strength and brightness. The different facets of storytelling weave together to create an incredibly well-presented final message about the importance of listening to and supporting victims. A fantastic hard-hitting story.
Note: While I am not an #ownvoice reviewer for autism or lesbian representation, I do write this review from the perspective of both a queer and neurodiverse existence.
