Ramona the Brave by Beverly Cleary

5.0

Ramona Quimby is one of literature's finest young protagonists, flawed yet lovable and filled to the brim with spunk and vigor. Cleary does such a wonderful job capturing the tender mind of a first grader: more grown up than a kindergartner while at the same time desperately craving love and attention from adults. It's been a very long time since I first read this book as a child, and I remembered little besides the final chapter covering Ramona's dealings with the neighborhood dog and slipper construction going in, but much of it came flooding back to me as I read and I was charmed all over again. The chapters describing events when Ramona was on the verge of getting into trouble really appealed to my son and fully piqued his interest!
