Beautiful Creatures: The Graphic Novel
by Kami Garcia
True rating is likely closer to a 2.5, but mainly because I enjoyed the art style and the ways the artist tried to convey small moments of comedy or emotion.
Read with a friend as part of a buddy read, neither of us were aware that 1. This was based on a series of books and 2. That a single graphic novel would probably condense much of its written source material.
Unfortunately, the pacing is fast and furious, with little to no detail given for the actual world building and relationships between characters. The characters themselves left a lot to be desired, but I think that’s partially because a graphic novel is highly condensed and also because the source material was originally published in 2009, so it feels a little like a relic of Twilight fantasy relationships and struggles (like the main ML’s big internal struggle is that he loves to read… but he plays basketball!!) The FL is a little more nuanced since she bears the weight of the emotional turmoil and conflict, but ultimately, it’s hard to root for the relationship, for her decision, for… anything, really. She is a cute character though
