The City of Brass by S.A. Chakraborty

okay, okay, i was kinda more into this than i thought i would be when i started reading this --

FIRST OF ALL,
i like nahri. i feel like there is a lot to her character and the duty she's been given. i also like alizayd (kind of?), and i like dara, though i think dara could have been developed better. the characters feel like they all have struggles to overcome, as well as challenge their own morals. i like that a lot.

nahri's and alizayd's friendship felt genuine, but dara's and nahri's relationship felt a little rushed. i do believe the affection is real between them, but marriage? full on love? it didn't get sold to me, sadly. though i quite like the protectiveness and the safe haven that they found in each other until the past caught up with them.

i like the politic intrigue, god i am a wh*re for politics in books !!!!! it was written nicely, though, and i think that is kind of sad? the tanzeem just got...thrown to the side towards the end of the book? i mean, i know that there were other things to worry about, but where is that going?

what i didn't like so much is, and i guess that's niche -- i am muslim as one can see from my profile picture. now, i am also shi'a, which means Imam Ali (as) and Zaynab (as) are actually important figures for my religion, so making Zaynab in the book drink alcohol and fool around with men is not the...most comfortable for me to read. obviously, there are a lot of zaynab's in this world, so it's very niche. and that's also not a reason why this book is 4 stars.

it has lost one star, because it really took them arriving at daevabad for me to actively enjoy reading it. it was not bad before, but it was just...dragging? i kind of thought dara was not very fleshed out, and nahri annoyed me in the beginning, but i grew fond of them quickly.

anyway, on to the sequel!!
