This Is How You Lose Her
by Junot Díaz
Crude, lewd, and visceral at times but also real and noirish. Some of these tales almost look like something from MTV's Jersey Shore but with Dominicans. Lots of passion, poignancy, and pathos in these tales of living and dying and the women who Yunior has slept with and loved. Most of the stories center around Yunior. Immigrants (Dominican for the most part) living in NY and NJ without their families in the winter, in the snow, just trying to make it. There's an assuredness in the storytelling as we go forward and backward in time in the life of Yunior. A writer writes what he knows about. Diaz has expertly captured the angst of youth and the immigrant experience of Dominicans. Perhaps it's time an author of his talent explored other mileiux.
