A deeply sad book. PKD shows a compassion for his junkies that could only be born from personal experience.
Unlike some of his other more literary-minded science fiction novels, the SF trappings of A Scanner Darkly help accentuate the themes of identity and addiction. But more than science fiction, the book is an epitaph to those PKD lost in the confusion of the drug scene of the 1960s and 70s.
