The Changeling by Victor LaValle

2.0

Normally I at least understand why someone would give a book 5 stars when I disliked it...
Normally I understand what the the author was trying to portray even if I didn't enjoy it...
I don't understand this one :/

It was like 3 different stories slammed together, all without a satisfying ending.
I enjoyed the set up, being introduced to these characters and their relationship- and I was really interested in what would happen after Emma did what she did.
I expected more time going into PTSD/postpartum depression before jumping into tragedy. Then we just time jump 6 months without feeling the immediate consequence of it.

Then it's random hidden village, but we're not there long enough to really feel anything for them.
It felt like an excuse to tell a fairytale and shove the themes and full on thesis statement down your throat- god forbid you be allowed to infer a theme/message of the story on your own... no, the book has to spell it out for you.
Then it's old school monster fairytale, add modern technology and spy wear, add random witchcraft- how did said character learn witchcraft??? I don't know... the only explanation is they had to.

The changeling component is a minimal aspect in the book that is exposition dumped in one chapter.... honestly this 430 page book could have been a novella.

When the plot doesn't make sense... Magic!
