Plain Truth by Jodi Picoult
5.0

An excellent mystery...I still find myself musing about it several months after finishing the book. It seems to me that the author had a good grasp of the Amish community, though, not being Amish myself, I can't know for sure. I just heard a speech by someone who does therapy with Amish youth, though, and his assessment was consistent with Picoult's perspective on the Amish.

Spoilers ahead...

I was frustrated by the mother's apparent willingness to let her daughter go to jail for a crime that she herself committed. And I, too, wondered why she would have killed the baby in the first place, since having a baby does not necessarily mean her daughter would be excommunicated. As a mother myself, it's pretty hard to imagine any compassionate and sane person killing their own grandchild.

Still, the book was a page-turner, and I was fascinated the whole way through.
