The Vanishing Half
by Brit Bennett
So this is one of those books you see hyped up EVERYWHERE. I mean there were about 430 holds for it at my library, so I was excited to finally get my hands on it, but I didn't find it soul-shattering or astounding or... interesting at all.
The family drama, simple but prolific prose, and themes covered in this book — such as domestic violence, colorism and its relationship to racism, transgender life, and more were really tackled in an interesting manner and I appreciate it.
But I had a really hard time feeling for ANY of these characters, and I felt really detached from all of them. Stella was such a shitty person, every time I had to read about her I lost my mind. Also - the timeline and way the book is formatted is extremely confusing.
I didn't love this book, but I also didn't hate it, in fact I just feel very... indifferent about it. Definitely feel like this one is overhyped.
