I didn't know anything about the Nigerian civil war prior to this book, so I am happy to read about it now. Having read two other books by the author, I was already a fan of her style and especially of her characters, who have real flaws and navigated war in their own unique way. The time jump wasn't super necessary but made the book a little more pace-y.

I found this line funny for some reason.
"Richard could not think of what to say. He did not know Kainene had talked to him from Pakistan and did not remember her ever mentioning a friendship with an army officer whose first name and surname were the same."  Chapter 3 page 99
