Chatter by Ethan Kross

This book was very interesting ideas. I've been working on my inner voice for quite awhile. I do think that is getting much better, but it is going to be something that I will always battle. The suggestions for how to improve your inner chatter were mostly things that I have actually started to do from either instinct or piecing together ideas from other books. However, they are things that I have had to learn over the course of my life as a woman in her 40's. It might have been life changing if I had found a way to incorporate them when I was still in my 20's when my inner voice could be absolutely cruel. I am hoping though that maybe I can use some of these ideas to help foster my teenager's inner voice.

The studies focusing on how the brain can perceive emotional pain in much the same way as physical pain really interesting. And, it is amazing to see how the use of placebos can help, even if we know they are placebos.

It was also fascinating when he discussed how just talking through past traumas can actually increase your level of depression. You need someone to logically help you see a way through them and process them instead of just reliving all your emotions from that event over and over. That was probably my biggest "a ha" moment of the book. I always thought it was good to get your feelings out and not keep them bottled up, but now I am wondering if that is really the case. If I confide to people that have nothing to offer me other than empathy, am I just causing myself more pain? I think so. And, that is a hard truth to swallow. I need to be more discretionary about who will actually help me see a way through an issue. I am going to be thinking about that one a lot in the days to come.

Overall, most of this book seemed to be around some very simple philosophies. However, once I sat down to write this review and reminisce on all the topics covered, I increased this from 4 to 5 stars. There are really some good nuggets of information in here.
