This book killed me! I can't decide what to think of it. There was so much interlude between what book one was and what book three will be that, by the last page, it had built up some major anticipation. The inner conflicts going on in both Karou and Akiva are hard to read. You just want to read through the pages and shake them both. But you can't. You have to ride the waves with them and it's sometimes very heartbreaking to do.
There's a lot of evil and injustices being done among the Chimaera and the Angels and it gets a little gruesome in parts. This is a bloody, terror driven war they are fighting and you desperately want Karou and Akiva to rise up and set things right.
I feel like this is a typical second book in a series. It has a good balance between complicating the story even more and gearing you up for eventual resolution. It leaves you really hoping. It also leaves you questioning whether the series will all be wrapped up neatly with a bow or leave you throwing your hands in the air.
