Finlay Donovan Is Killing It
by Elle Cosimano
funny
lighthearted
mysterious
medium-paced
This book totally gave me vibes of those classic comedy movies where *everything* goes wrong in the most hilariously chaotic ways. Every word Finlay says gets wildly misinterpreted, and somehow there’s always someone in her life who’s just like, “Yeah, this is fine!” and even encourages it.
It’s witty, funny, and so relatable—especially if you’re a struggling single mom just trying to keep it together. Finlay is such a lovable mess, and the story definitely leans into those “fuck them men” vibes while delivering a solid dose of female empowerment.Like, sure, she has no intention of actually killing the guy, but then she scopes him out and realizes, “Wow, he’s a total scumbag.” And then, surprise! He ends up dead in the back of her van—through absolutely no fault of her own, of course.
The woman who *hired* Finlay to kill the guy still pays her, though, and even connects her with more women looking to off their awful husbands. Meanwhile, Finlay starts writing a novel inspired by her ridiculous situation, and her agent goes all-in, landing her a huge book deal. Suddenly, between the “contract killing” and the book advance, Finlay’s financial struggles are a thing of the past.
What makes this even better is the friendship she develops with her kids’ nanny, who moves into help with the kids *and* the whole “try not to accidentally become a full-time hit mom” situation. Their dynamic is so fun, and the humor just keeps building.
Of course, the book ends on a cliffhangerwhen Finlay stumbles across a post in the “kill my husband” support forum. This time, someone wants to hire her to take out *her own ex-husband*—aka the father of her kids!
This was such a fun and chaotic read. I’m definitely picking up the sequel!
