The King siblings (Junior, Mance, Cece, and Tokey) have been living their lives independently of one another for years. Each has their own struggles that they are facing which make them blind to what their siblings are going through until they are reunited. When their father, King Solomon dies, they are brought back to the “Kingdom” aka the Solomon plantation. On top of coping with their father’s passing, they must now deal with the threat of their family land being taken from them. And if they don’t let their personal walls down, the family walls may crumble.

I LOVED One Summer In Savannah last year, so I couldn’t wait for the author’s second book to come out. Unfortunately, this one just missed the mark for me ☹️ While the topics of multi-generational trauma and race inequality were poignant and interesting, I struggled to get through this book as I couldn’t connect to any of the siblings. We heard the story from each of their perspectives, but it felt like everyone was put in silos, and I would have loved to see more sibling moments.

Favorite Quotes: “You accept what you’ve done. You sit with it and in it. You live with it, all the pain, all the hurt, all the guilt. Until it’s done with you. Until you are done with it. You survive it.”
