Wolves of the Calla by Stephen King

5.0

Gonna be brief with my review here and dig in a little more with my video review later, but I really enjoyed this.

Part One was fantastic - I adored all of the callbacks and references (etc.) to scenes in previous entries of the series. Was awesome.

Similarly, Part Three was also fantastic. There a few more callbacks, but most of it was what I presume to be looking forward to the final 2 installments, and make me even more excited than I was before to finish these books.

Part Two was a little more of a mixed bag though overall. I enjoyed most of what it was doing, but I think it could've easily been 75 or so pages shorter and would've been better off for it.

Many people have an issue with a lot of this book basically being a side-quest after Wizard and Glass was 85% flashback, but I didn't really have a problem with. All of the callbacks and looking-forward moments I caught in Parts One and Three, and even the planning sequences (and similar) in Part Two felt like they were laying very important seeds of information that I'll need for the future books.

So yeah, sure this book is pretty much a side-quest, but it's also more than that. It uses that side-quest to also project the general story forward in a way that I personally feel like enriches the experience.
